When is Baisakhi & why it is celebrated?

Baisakhi is a spring festival celebrated by Sikh and Hindu communities. Celebrated on April 13 or 14, the festival commemorates Sikh New Year and the formation of Khalsa Panth of warriros under Guru Govind Singh in 1699. Hindus celebrate this day as the solar New Year and take a dip in the holy water of river Ganges.

On Vaisakhi of 1699, Guru Gobind Singh decided to transform Sikhs into a family of saint soldiers, known as Khalsa Panth. On this day, Guru challenged any Sikh warrior who was prepared to give his life. Five people volunteered and they later came to be known as Panj Piare or the beloved five. Guru instead of killing them baptized them with Amrit and formed five membered Khalsa. The main aim of this group was to defend religious freedom.

Apart from historical and religious significance, Vaisakhi marks the ripening of the Rabi crop. Farmers take this day as an opportunity to thank god for a splendid harvest. Mainly celebrated in Punjab, Haryana, and a few other north Indian states, this festival is going to be celebrated on Monday, April 13.

As celebrations are concerned, they sure are grand. In Punjab, Gurudwaras are decorated and a possession led by five Khalsa, called Nagar Kirtan, is organized. Singling religious hymns, flocking to local fairs and Bhangra are common sites. In other parts of India, people take a dip in holy waters, dress in ethnic wear, indulge in traditional delicacies, visit their beloved ones and present them with gifts. Also, the day is regarded as one of the best days to venture out a new business.
