Being a mother is no simple feat. A mother binds the entire family together, she cares for her children, she makes sacrifices for them and she accepts us just the way we are. Mothers are one of the most selfless creatures in this world and celebrating them is the least we can do to thank these wonderful souls.

Mother’s Day celebrates the spirit of motherhood, it celebrates the contribution of mothers in our lives and it presents us with an opportunity to express our oceanic love towards our mother. Gifts are a simple yet powerful way to convey strong feelings of love, care, and gratitude. You can let your mother feel how valued she is and how much you love her with the best Mother’s Day gifts. And trust me, the gifts do not always have to be best. Just a thoughtful gift along with your sincere words will let her feel the warmth of your love.

But how did it all begin? Have we been celebrating the day for centuries or honoring moms is a recent trend? Lets us dive into to find out how it all got started.

Mother’s Day celebration traces back to ancient Greece and Rome when people honored the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. In modern times, the celebration dates back to the Christian festival of Mothering Sunday. The United Kingdom and parts of Europe celebrated in on the fourth Sunday in Lent. However, the celebration faded and merged into the American Mother’s Day celebration.

So, how did it start in the leader of the free world, America? In later parts of the 19th century, Ann Reeves Jarvis helped start Mothers’ Day Work Clubs to teach women how to care for their children. Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, started present day Mother’s Day celebration in 1905 to honor the efforts and sacrifices mothers made for their children.

Anna Jarvis resolved to get Mother’s Day celebration added to the national calendar. She established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. Finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day celebration (on the second Sunday of May) an official one.

Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries across the world, though the date and how people indulge in celebrations vary significantly. In Indian society, mothers have always been held in high regard. However, in a recent transition, we have started to express it profoundly. Children present their mothers with unique gift ideas for mom, take pictures with her and post it on social media, help her in house chores, and try to make the day a special one for her.
